Modernization of WAN Connectivity through the Implementation of SD-WAN Technology

Client: Gorenjske lekarne
Service: SD-WAN (Software- Defined Networking)
End Customer: Gorenjske lekarne
Challenge: Gorenjske lekarne, with 25 branches across Slovenia, faced increasing challenges in managing their existing WAN infrastructure. While connectivity was generally reliable, it was expensive, inflexible, and ineffective in ensuring the necessary Quality of Service (QoS) for business-critical applications. By implementing the Fortinet Secure SD-WAN solution, they significantly improved network performance, security, and manageability—while simultaneously reducing operational costs.

Solution:
As part of the network overhaul, we deployed Fortinet Secure SD-WAN—a solution that combines intelligent traffic routing and built-in security in a single device (FortiGate).

Instead of relying on costly and rigid MPLS connections, the company now uses a combination of multiple internet links (e.g., fiber + LTE), with SD-WAN dynamically selecting the optimal path for each application based on real-time conditions such as latency, packet loss, and SLA requirements. Business-critical applications are prioritized, which results in better responsiveness and an improved user experience.

Security is embedded directly into each SD-WAN device, including advanced firewall capabilities, traffic filtering, IPS, and SSL inspection. Each site is independently protected, eliminating the need to backhaul traffic through a central location.

We also introduced centralized management via FortiManager, enabling rapid deployment of new sites, consistent policy enforcement, and a unified view of the network. Redundant connections (e.g., LTE backup) provide high availability and minimize downtime.

Through integration with FortiAnalyzer, the client gained detailed visibility into network activity—traffic patterns, security events, link usage, and application performance. This data enables the IT team to continuously optimize network behavior, adjust application priorities, and respond quickly to incidents.

Business Impact:

By adopting the Fortinet SD-WAN solution, Gorenjske lekarne successfully modernized their WAN infrastructure. The transition resulted in lower connectivity costs, better user experience, and a significantly enhanced level of security and control. The project also laid the foundation for further IT transformation, moving toward a SASE architecture and Zero Trust model.

Why ADD:

ADD is one of the leading Fortinet partners in the region, holding the title of Fortinet Expert Partner and backed by a team of certified professionals. ADD is not just a supplier, but a consultative partner that helped design the network architecture, security policy, and SD-WAN deployment strategy tailored to the client’s specific needs.

ADD took full responsibility for end-to-end project delivery—from planning and testing to implementation, documentation, and user training—with minimal impact on daily business operations.
